Publications of the Wasserchemische Gesellschaft & its committees

The Water Chemistry Society and its committees publish books, papers or guidelines on current water chemistry topics or challenges at irregular intervals.

Guideline for non-target screening (2025)

Application of non-target screening using LC-ESI-HRMS in water analysis
Prepared by the Non-Target Screening Technical Committee of the German Water Chemistry Society

This guideline is intended to provide a framework for the application of non-target analysis. Compared to the first edition from 2019, this edition also deals with validation and quality assurance in separate chapters. In addition, the chapter on statistical analysis has been significantly expanded.

Structure elucidation from LC-HRMS data: Common software tools for the environmental sector (2025)

Developed by the Technical Committee Non-Target-Screening of the Water Chemistry Society

The intention of this document is to present the databases and software tools most commonly used in water analysis for structure elucidation based on prioritised features from non-target analyses (NTA) in order to facilitate the introduction to their use. In addition to the NTS guideline of the Wasserchemische Gesellschaft, detailed information on structure elucidation is compiled. The document is written by users for users and therefore also contains tips and tricks for using the databases and programmes portrayed. It refers to existing aids, learning and explanatory videos and corresponding literature, but does not fail to mention limitations.

Research strategy of the Water Chemistry Society (2023)

The research strategy (edition 1.0 2023) outlines the tasks and multidisciplinary activities of the Main Research Committee. As a result of climate change, fundamentally new concepts must be developed that lead to rapid and sustainable solutions. Water and water quality are a valuable asset that has always been a high priority for research in Germany. Almost 1000 scientists are organised in the Water Chemistry Society to jointly develop solutions that lead to sustainable and future-oriented water management. The more than 100 scientists on the main research committee discuss current developments, summarise them and examine them with regard to their practical relevance. The focus here is on interdisciplinary approaches, as the topic of water touches on many different specialist disciplines.

Thematic volume T1/2023 - Integrative assessment concept for advanced wastewater treatment (2023)

The thematic volume describes a new concept for the evaluation of treatment processes for advanced wastewater treatment, both in a pilot phase for the selection of process options and for the evaluation of large-scale plants. The concept is based on an integrated approach that takes into account both emissions and immissions in water bodies. Two selected practical examples show that it is useful to determine selected reductions or removals of substances, microorganisms and (eco)toxicological effects in order to evaluate the process options at a site.

Non-target screening guidelines (2019)

Application of non-target screening using LC-ESI-HRMS in water analysis
Developed by the Non-Target Screening Technical Committee of the German Water Chemistry Society

This guideline is intended to provide an initial framework for the application of non-target analysis. Around 20 colleagues from universities, research institutes, authorities and water suppliers contributed their practical experience in the use of high-resolution mass spectrometry in water analysis.
