WASSER - Annual Conference of the GDCh Water Chemistry Division

WASSER is the central conference for the water industry in Germany and the annual conference of the Water Chemistry Society.

Professionals and experts from all areas of water chemistry, water treatment and other disciplines meet every year in May at different locations for an intensive exchange of experience and ideas.

The conference focuses on personal encounters and scientific discussions on current technical challenges.

WASSER 2026 (11-13 May 2026; Kiel)

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the specialist group, the Water Chemistry Society is returning to its founding location: the city of Kiel.

WASSER 2025 (26 - 28 May 2025; Münster)

Programme (German)
Programme (English)

The university city of Münster in western Germany is known for its bicycle-friendly cityscape and is therefore also known as a cycling city. With its 320,000 inhabitants, it is one of the main centres of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. A well-known landmark is the 13th century St. Paul's Cathedral, which is characterised by Gothic and romantic elements. The Aasee, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the WASSER 2025 venue, is a reservoir which, together with the adjacent meadows and forests, is considered an inner-city recreation area. WASSER 2024 (06 - 08 May 2024; Limburg an der Lahn)

Programme

Limburg an der Lahn is the district town of the central Hessian district of Limburg-Weilburg and, together with the neighbouring Rhineland-Palatinate town of Diez forms a cross-state dual centre with around 47,000 inhabitants. Due to its location, Limburg acts as a centre for the sparsely populated western part of Hesse as well as for parts of the Westerwald district and the Rhine-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate. Limburg is best known for its cathedral and the picturesque half-timbered old town. From the old Lahn bridge you can see the mighty old cathedral with its towers. This is also the site of Germany's only surviving bridge tower from the 14th century. (Photo: © City Marketing Limburg)

WASSER 2023 (15 - 17 May 2023; Augsburg)

Programme

After three years of abstinence, during which personal exchange was not possible, the annual meeting of the Wasserchemische Gesellschaft was once again held as an in-person event in the water city of Augsburg.Augsburg, a vibrant city with Italian flair and joie de vivre, is one of the most important business locations in Bavaria with a population of around 300,000. Over the centuries, the city's history has been characterised by water. With the "Augsburg Water Management System", Augsburg has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019 and is therefore predestined for our annual conference. The historic city centre offers many more sights worth seeing than just the Renaissance town hall with its Golden Hall or the Perlach Tower. The power of the Fuggers and their world fame can still be felt here. (Photo: © Regio Augsburg Tourismus GmbH)

WATER 2022 (23-25 May 2022; online)

Programme

With a heavy heart, in order to avoid all risks and to have planning security, the Executive Board decided once again to hold an event in an online format due to the pandemic situation. The decision not to press ahead with the conference planning for Wiesbaden had to be made at a time when it was not possible to predict how the situation would develop until May. WATER 2021 (10-12 May 2021; online)

Programme

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the GDCh had to cancel all face-to-face events for a second year in a row. As this was foreseeable, an alternative concept in the form of an online event was developed in advance, which reproduced many elementary parts of the annual conference. WATER 2020 (cancelled)

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the annual conference planned in Potsdam had to be cancelled at short notice. It was bitter for everyone involved to have to cancel the Water Chemistry Society's annual conference for the first time since 1948. (Photo: © Pixabay_neufal54)

WASSER 2019 (27 - 29 May 2019; Erfurt)

The 2019 annual conference was held in Erfurt, the beautiful state capital of Thuringia. With a population of around 213,000, the state metropolis is one of the most attractive university, trade fair and conference locations in Thuringia. The city of Luther, cathedral and flowers can look back on an eventful past of over 1250 years. The cityscape is characterised by one of the best-preserved medieval old town centres in Germany. Originally built at the crossroads of important trade routes, Erfurt is not only an architectural gem, but also the centre of a cultural landscape that has evolved over the centuries. WASSER 2018 (07 - 09 May 2018; Papenburg)

Programme

In 2018, the water chemistry community came together for the 84th annual conference in Papenburg, the so-called "Venice of the North". Germany's longest and oldest fen colony (bog settlement) with its 37,000 inhabitants is located in the northern Emsland region, in the direct neighbourhood of East Frisia and the Netherlands. Water as the source of all life - again we come across the reference to the main element of the Wasserchemische Gesellschaft, which was the basis for the development of the town: in the 1930s of the 17th century, the founder of the town, Dietrich, established a waterworks in the town. In the 1930s, the town founder Dietrich von Velen created the first canals for draining the moor and subsequent peat extraction in order to deliver the peat by ship to the East Frisian brickworks. Today, Papenburg is also associated with the construction of impressive cruise ships. (Photo: © Papenburg Marketing, Ute Müller)

WASSER 2017 (22-24 May 2017; Donaueschingen)

Programme

The 83rd annual conference took place in Donaueschingen. The residence town of the Princes of Fürstenberg with its approx. 23,000 inhabitants is ideally located on the edge of the southern Black Forest and close to Lake Constance, the Swabian Alb and Switzerland. The Donauhallen provided first-class facilities for the requirements of the water conference. Water as the source of all life - rarely has the connection to the main element of the Water Chemistry Society been as clear as in Donaueschingen. While the larger Breg river at the Martinskapelle chapel near Furtwangen is the hydrological source, the source of the Donaubach stream in Donaueschingen is symbolised as the source of the Danube. Around two kilometres east of the town, it joins the Brigach and Breg, the named beginning of the Danube, to form a single large river. From here, the Danube embarks on its long journey to the Black Sea and connects the different cultures of Europe from west to east in a unique way. WASSER 2016 (02-04 May 2016; Bamberg)

Programme

The "Wasser 2016" took place in Bamberg from 2 to 4 May 2016. This time, the Welcome Kongresshotel Bamberg provided the venue. The Upper Franconian diocesan town on the Regnitz river, founded in 1007 by Emperor Henry II, is now home to around 70,000 inhabitants. The old imperial and episcopal city is characterised as a prosperous business location and young university town with a rich cultural life. With the largest intact old town centre in Europe, Bamberg has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1993. (Photo: © Press Office City of Bamberg)

WASSER 2015 (11-16 May 2015; Schwerin)

Programme

In 2015, the 81st Annual Meeting of the Water Chemistry Society opened its doors in Schwerin, the "City of Seven Lakes and Forests". Schwerin and water are inextricably linked - reason enough to hold the annual conference here. 245 participants registered, who were offered 23 lectures and 81 posters (Photo: © Stadtmarketing GmbH Schwerin)
