Survey on the next generation of university lecturers

The GDCh collects data at irregular intervals with the support of the deans' offices of the chemistry faculties at German universities to compile the survey on habilitations, junior professorships and the proportion of women among professors. From 2020 (survey period 2019) data on postdocs1 and senior postdocs2 as well as junior research group leaders will also be collected.

At the end of 2004, the GDCh collected data on habilitations, habilitation candidates and junior professorships at German universities for the first time. The proportion of female C3 and C4 professors was also surveyed. The results were published in the following April issue (every two years until 2016) of Nachrichten aus der Chemie

We would like to thank all the contact persons involved for their support.
Without you, we would not have been able to produce this survey every two years since 2004!

Your GDCh Careers Service

1 Postdoc for the purposes of this survey: Scientific staff who have less than two years of research experience as a postdoc (this does not have to have taken place at their own university)
2 Senior postdoc for the purposes of this survey: Scientific staff who have more than two years of research experience as a postdoc (this does not have to have taken place at their own university)

Results of the 2019 survey

At the end of 2019, there were fewer habilitation candidates at German universities than two years ago. The number of postdocs, senior postdocs and junior research group leaders was recorded for the first time. The number of junior professors stagnated.
The proportion of women among professors continues to show a positive trend. Despite a slight increase, however, this does not yet correspond to the proportion of women among students or doctoral candidates.

The complete results of the eighth survey can be found in the "Nachrichten aus der Chemie" issue 10/20 and here as a pdf.

Results of the 2016 survey

At the end of 2016, there were fewer habilitation candidates at German universities than two years ago. The number of junior professors, on the other hand, has stagnated. The proportion of women among professors continues to show a positive trend. However, despite a slight increase, this still does not correspond to the proportion of women among students or doctoral candidates.

The complete results of the seventh survey can be found in the "Nachrichten aus der Chemie" issue 04/17 and here as a pdf.

Appointment situation - about prospects and opportunities for an academic career

How many professorships will become vacant in the coming years? This question about the prospects and opportunities of a career in academia concerns almost all young scientists. The evaluation of the job advertisement service (...), which has been carried out every two years since 2009, aims to help shed light on the situation.
