HomepageStatistics on chemistry degree programmes at universities
GDCh statistics on chemistry degree programmes

... is not just any publication from us, but the most important annual publication of the GDCh. How many first-year students are there where, how many students have completed their Master's degree and how long do they actually study and where do they all end up? With 60 pages, 20 charts and 38 tables, there is hardly a question left unanswered.

Our statistics collect data on Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes as well as doctorates in Chemistry/Economic Chemistry, Biochemistry/Life Sciences, Food Chemistry (LM-Chemistry) and data on chemistry degree programmes at universities of applied sciences (HAW).

The brochure "Statistics on Chemistry Degree Programmes - A GDCh Survey on Chemistry Degree Programmes at Universities and Colleges in Germany" is published annually in July. The brochure with all data, tables and graphics can be viewed and downloaded free of charge as PDF brochure.

In addition, a graphical representation of the most important data appears in Nachrichten aus der Chemie, issue 7/8 (2024).

On these pages you will also find the most important graphics from the statistics as PDF files for download.

Cumulative doctorate - where is this possible?

In the natural sciences, the dissertation in the form of a monograph has now been supplemented by the alternative of the cumulative variant. Cumulative dissertations are publication-based; i.e. doctoral candidates can write their dissertation by means of publications that belong to and have been published in peer-reviewed journals on a related topic. The conditions can be found in the examination regulations of the respective university. There are differences, for example, in the required number of publications and the relevance of authorship/first authorship.

According to the GDCh survey of German universities, a cumulative doctorate in chemistry is possible at 49 out of 55 universities, in biochemistry at 22 out of 35 universities.

No secret: the calculation of the study duration
There is hardly any other value that universities are fighting for as hard as the length of study programmes. After all, short study periods are an important advantage in the competition for students. To ensure that individual students who take considerably longer than average to complete their exams due to illness, a part-time job or other reasons do not "spoil" the value of their university, the median values, also known as 50% values, are calculated from the information provided by the universities. They ensure that particularly slow students, but also the "high-flyers" with extremely short study durations, are not taken into account and allow a better comparison of study durations than the arithmetic average. You can find out exactly what the median value is and how it is calculated here .
