Spirits working group

Objectives of the Spirits Working Group

  • Exchange of information on the production, composition and labelling of spirits and any associated problems
  • Development of compromise solutions with regard to the legal assessment of spirits and beverages containing spirits
  • Opinions on legislative proposals and amendments to existing legal regulations at EC and national level concerning spirits and beverages containing spirits
  • Production of position papers on current topics

Topics of the last meetings
Topics of the last meeting included the following:
  • The representative of the BMELV, who was invited as a guest, reported on new or planned spirits legislation; He reported on EU law, in particular the implementing regulation on "compound terms" and the EU Food Information Regulation, as well as national spirits law (AGeV) and the technical documentation to be prepared for geographical indications (in particular grain/grain brandy); the changes for the alcohol and spirits market with regard to the abolition of the spirits monopoly from 1 January 2018 were also briefly discussed.   • Examples of compound terms with regard to the future implementing regulation; a collection of examples is suggested
  • Whisky: production according to the wort method
