Who we are - What we do

Research, development, production and distribution of goods have significantly improved our lives over the last century and especially in recent decades. The success in all areas, be it new medicines, new plastics, agrochemicals, paints and varnishes, fibres or the new issues of biotechnological production, would not have been possible without the corresponding intellectual property rights. The core work of the GDCh specialist group, which was founded in 1949, is the promotion of members working in the fields of patent law, industrial property protection and patent issues. Conferences, seminars and colloquia serve this purpose.

History

The former specialist group "Intellectual Property" was renamed the specialist group "Patent Law" on 11 November 2019 - legitimised by the General Assembly and following a provisional decision by the GDCh Executive Board on 18 March 2019. The reason for this is firstly that the German term "Gewerblicher Rechtsschutz" is hardly used in specialist circles and secondly that there are no chemistry-specific aspects to be considered on the side of non-technical property rights, such as trade marks, so that the specialist group deals almost exclusively with technical property rights. Here, the term "patent" is often used as a synonym for the entire category of IP rights and is an established term, especially in inventor circles.

Symposia / workshops / specialisation days

The specialised group is valued as an educational forum for patent law, as a forum for the exchange of experience on patent issues, legislation, case law and official practice. Specialisation days, symposia and workshops have made a particular contribution to this since its introduction in 1983.

University / Further education

Many chemists who leave university have little or no knowledge of patent law. For this reason, experts from the specialist group organise seminars and lectures for chemists and natural scientists to provide them with the relevant tools and basic knowledge for working in the field of intellectual property.

It is the express aim of the Executive Board to teach chemists the relevant basics of patent law at other colleges and universities, emphasising the chemistry aspect.
