"I opted out of chemistry in sixth form" or "I've never understood that". This is how many people react when you mention that you studied chemistry at a party or family celebration. Yet most chemists are convinced (and female chemists too, by the way) that their subject is totally exciting and important for humanity. How can the gap between the two sides - chemistry enthusiasts and non-chemists - be bridged? A search for clues from the perspective of someone who is caught between two stools.

  • "The general public" - who am I dealing with?
    • What is meant by "scientific laypeople"?
    • Is there a "general public"?
    • Why is it important to know the target group
  • "People, animals, sensations"
    • The most popular articles in the science section
    • "What does this have to do with me?" - Readers' or listeners' perspectives
  • "How do I tell my child" - A brief digression on language
    • How to convey chemistry content
    • Understandability
    • Entertainment
  • What to do. A personal conclusion
