Who we are - What we do

The GDCh Chemistry & Energy Division was founded in 2009 and currently has over 500 members from universities, research institutions, industry and administration - and the trend is steadily increasing in view of the challenges of the global energy transition. Student and young members make up more than half of the membership. The network, which is young in every respect, is a forum for anyone who is interested in chemical contributions to the energy transition or would like to participate in it.

The energy transition is one of the greatest challenges of our time
Our modern industrial society and therefore also chemical production are based on fossil fuels, whether as a raw material or energy supplier. Global growth and increasing industrialisation are leading to a steadily rising demand for energy worldwide. At the same time, however, fossil fuel reserves are finite, are associated with geopolitical challenges and their utilisation has an incalculable impact on the climate. The development of new, renewable and climate-neutral energy sources and the resource-conserving and efficient utilisation of these energy contingents are therefore of central importance for a successful energy transformation. As a cross-sectional technology, chemistry has a key role to play here.

Chemistry and energy go hand in hand

  • Development of climate-neutral energy sources such as photovoltaics or thermoelectrics
  • Development of energy storage systems and vectors such as battery or hydrogen technologies
  • Enabling energy transformation through e.g. fuel cells or CO2 utilisation/e-fuels

Our contribution to the energy transition: Building bridges between industry and academia
The aim of the Chemistry & Energy Division is to strengthen cooperation between academia and industry to successfully advance the energy transition. Consequently, events and initiatives focus on exchange and cooperation formats to illuminate different perspectives, especially economic ones.
