Equal Opportunities in Chemistry Working Group (AKCC)

The Equal Opportunities in Chemistry Working Group (AKCC) was dissolved on 31 December 2017. This page serves as documentation and as a link to the resulting GDCh Commission on Equal Opportunities in Chemistry.

The "Arbeitskreis Chancengleichheit in der Chemie - Sektion in der GDCh" (AKCC) was a substructure of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker and was initially founded on 24 March 2000 as a working group in Frankfurt, primarily to strengthen the position of women in chemistry at all levels. On 1 January 2003, the working group was transformed into a section, a specialist structure with statutory status.

Objectives and areas of work were

  • AKCC as an interdisciplinary, career-oriented offer
  • Equal opportunities as an internal task
  • Women at work
  • Compatibility of career and family
  • Promotion of girls
  • Contact with other organisations

The vote to dissolve the AKCC was held in 2017 with a deadline of 16 June.

Result of the vote on the dissolution of the AKCC 2017
The vote to dissolve the AKCC was held on 16 June 2017.

The evaluation of the votes cast yielded the following result: Eligible voters: 230 members
Properly cast votes: 71 members
Voting turnout: 30.87 %
Invalid votes: 0 The AKCC can be dissolved if this is decided in accordance with §10 of the AKCC rules of procedure after a general meeting convened for this purpose with at least a two-thirds majority of votes of all AKCC members. As not all AKCC members appeared on 3 March 2017, the resolution was subsequently passed by online or written survey of the members in accordance with the rules of procedure. In this case, a two-thirds majority (75%) of the valid votes cast applied. The proportion of votes in favour was 83.1%. The dissolution of the Equal Opportunities in Chemistry Working Group (AKCC) has therefore been approved by the members with the required majority - in favour. The GDCh Executive Board had already approved this dissolution in its meeting on 5 December 2016 in Weinheim by way of a provisional resolution. The Equal Opportunities in Chemistry Working Group (AKCC) will therefore be dissolved with effect from 31 December 2017.
Equal opportunities in the GDCh - transformation from working group to commission
On 13 September 2017, the constituent meeting of the GDCh Commission "Equal Opportunities in Chemistry" established by the GDCh Board of Directors took place.

The GDCh Commission "Equal Opportunities in Chemistry" supports the GDCh in its goal of promoting equal opportunities. It steers and monitors the progress of the principles, regulations and activities relating to equal opportunities on behalf of and in consultation with the GDCh Executive Board. To this end, the commission analyses the GDCh's fields of action for equal opportunities, defines criteria, develops measures where necessary and implements them.
